The Four Resources

Food

Used for troop training, healing and many building upgrades. Consumed constantly by large armies, which is why food shortages appear suddenly once you are training seriously.

Fix: gather it. Food nodes are plentiful and it is the easiest resource to top up in a hurry.

Wood

The other early-game staple. Building upgrades eat it constantly through the whole first half of the game.

Fix: gather it, and prioritise wood research and gathering commanders early.

Stone

The late-game bottleneck. Stone is not used much early, then suddenly gates every high-level building upgrade during the City Hall 17–25 grind.

Fix: start gathering stone before you need it. Players who wait until City Hall 18 to think about stone lose weeks.

Gold

The scarcest resource in practice.

What is gold used for in Rise of Kingdoms? Three things:

Academy research — the largest sink by far, and it grows enormous in the T5 research chain.
Training and healing T4 and T5 troops.
Equipment forging at the Blacksmith, where a single piece can run from a few hundred thousand to several million gold.

Note what is not on that list: commanders. Commanders consume sculptures and experience tomes, not gold. Gold nodes are rarer on the map and yield less than the others, so plan gold gathering deliberately — a dedicated gold gathering commander running permanently is worth more than it looks.

Gems

The premium currency. Earned free from events, daily objectives, expedition, gift codes and the tavern, or bought. Spend on sculptures and timed acceleration, not on random chests — see how to get gems.

Where Resources Actually Come From

In descending order of impact:

Map gathering. By far the largest source once you have several march queues. Alliance nodes yield most — see best gathering commanders.
Farm accounts. The mid-game answer to the resource wall.
Events and event stores. Substantial, and free — see the event calendar.
Alliance sources. Gifts, chests, and Trading Post transfers from a farm account. Alliance territory also adds a share of everything members gather straight to the alliance storehouse.
Looting other players. Real, but situational and it makes enemies.
In-city production. A trickle. Do not build your plan around it.

Protecting Resources

The rule that catches everyone once: anything above your protected cap can be looted.

Storehouse level sets your protected amount. Upgrade it once you start holding real quantities — see the buildings guide.
Convert to items. Resource items in your bag cannot be stolen. This is the standard move before KvK and before logging off during a war.
Spend down before logging off. Resources in a build queue are safe; resources in a warehouse are a target.
Shelter or shield during active conflict.

Fixing Shortages

Short on food or wood: gather. These are the easy ones.
Short on stone: point every march at stone for a few days. Start earlier than you think you need to.
Short on gold: gold gathering plus event rewards. Also check that you are not wasting it on research you do not need yet.
Short on everything: you need more march queues and probably a farm account. Queues come from City Hall 5, 11, 17 and 22 — not from VIP.
